The Good Hurt

A few months ago, I got into a good three-times-a-week rythm of jogging. Not a lot, but enough to get my pulse going for at least twenty minutes and my breath to run out way before that.
Since I moved to the US, I have gained considerable weight, some of which looks alright (compared to how I used to look), some of which needs to go. And sitting in front of Photoshop or iStockphoto all day does not help in that department. Neither does being married to a food stylist/photographer. So, there I was, going out running and being a good boy. And after about a month and a half, I stopped. For no apparent reason.
Anyway, time went by and I broke my toe - the perfect excuse - and in the meantime, I turned thirty. The guilty conscience was nagging me on a regular basis in the back of my mind by then. Get back out there, it said, get your head out of your ass. And so one day, I took my bloodpressure in one of the drug store do-it-yourself things, knowing that it would be high (partly because I was expecting it to be, which made me nervous, which in turn raised my blood pressure even more), and sure enough: I was in the red.
So finally, the increasing fatness, the high blood pressure and the internal nagging got to me, and I went back out there today. And it hurts. But it’s sort of a good hurt. If I don’t die from a heart attack in the next few weeks, I’m hoping this will be the first step to a better me. Wish me luck.

You can do it Ras! My increasing blood pressure was what finally got me to shed 30 lbs.
Sorry to hear about your toe, and how the h*ck did I miss your birthday. Happy 30!!!!

Thanks, Rob. 30 lbs is quite a bit. I’ll be happy with about half of that. As for my birthday, I dunno how you missed it. It being world news and all.

Hey Rasmus,
Just keep on going. One day you get addicted to it. I did. In the beginning it was so hard, never thought I would be able to get further than 4 km…. And now I do marathons….
