i disagree with saying just go with Nikon or Canon. While i have a Nikon D300 and am very partial to Nikon. i encourage everyone to look on reputable review websites like dpreview.com and make an educated decision on camera types for yourself. Whether it is a Nikon, Canon, Sony, Pentax or Olympus, each camera has different things that will cater to different photographer's needs.

I would go for low Canon series only because of two reasons - there is way to upper models and its quite good in image quality. However I cant imagine using it extensively outdoor+travel like I do use my metal body Olympus E-300 or using it like Pentax k10D.
I dont see these reasons with Nikon as cheapest models are quite crappy against its competitors, D40/50 cant go against Canon 350/400D, Olympus E410/510 or Pentax k10D and Nikon D80 is very poor against K20D or Canon 40D.

I agree completely that all cheap DSLRs are geting better, eg. noise level is now incredibly low in comparison to cameras just few years ago. Also prices dropped quite a lot. But Canon and Nikon now have to prove they are the best with their very skilled and aggresive opponents like Sony, Pentax and Olympus.

Basti : While I agree that the earlier Nikons had a lot of noise problems (starting at ISO 200 was not exactly helping), they really have improved a lot. The point being that all the cheaper DSLRs are getting better and better, while the price stays more or less the smae. From what I have seen so far though, nothing beats Canon for overall quality.

I strongly disagree with that cheap Nikon or Canon - especially Nikon D40 and D50 are junk, new D60 follows - plastic crap with low compatibility to other Nikon gear, very bad choice! Cheap Canons (300D, 350D, 400D, 450D) are very good in image quality but very bad in body durability. Canons and Nikons are quite poor in quality/price under Canon 40D or Nikon D300.

On the other hand there are very strong cheap cameras from other producers which easily beat any Canon or Nikon under $1000 (just body) - Olympus E-410 and E-510, Pentax K10D and K20D, Sony 100, 200, 300 and 350, Samsung GX-10 and GX-20.

My rejection rate dropped dramatically when I upgraded from my Sony P&S to a Canon 300D. Still plenty of rejections, but that was operator error, not the camera.

Great series of articles Ras :)
